Technopolis Innopoli 1 – Façade renovation

In June, BRIX will launch a major new project in Otaniemi, Espoo, along the Ring Road 1. The approximately 6,500 square metre clinker facade of Kiinteistö Oy Technopolis Innopoli 1 will be renovated with a modern and energy-efficient BRIX system.

The project will be carried out in two phases: the first will be the Ring Road 1 facade, which will be completed in 2025. The rest of the building’s façades will receive a new clinker finish in 2026.

The new ventilated BRIX clinker will be installed directly on top of the existing sandwich cladding. The old cladding element will first be anchored to the frame, additional thermal insulation will be installed and finally the new clinker surface, which will match the original, will finish every detail of the façade. The client wanted the renovation to be carried out in a way that preserved the look of the building – and that’s exactly what our solutions do.

Pekka Haapalainen and Linda Tikkanen of Progem Oy are the project’s construction consultants, while Riku Huopaniemi of Sarc + Sigge Arkkitehdit Oy and Tommi Sassi are responsible for the architectural design. Afry Finland Oy is responsible for the technical supervision.

Built in 1991, the façade is at the end of its life.

BRIX visited the ABC Klinkker factory in Germany

In the spring, the BRIX team headed to Germany to the ABC Klinkker factory. The aim of the visit was to deepen cooperation and ensure that the products selected for the Technopolis Innopolis 1 project met all requirements – both technically and visually. ABC Klinker is an important partner for BRIX in several ongoing projects and the cooperation is constantly being developed further.

ABC Klinker is one of Europe’s leading clinker manufacturers, and their range of colours offers a wealth of options for individual façade projects. On the factory visit, we were able to see an impressive sample of the colour range – shades can be precisely selected on a site-by-site basis.

For the Technopolis project, ABC Klinker has carried out extensive tests and samples to verify that the clinker tiles fully meet the strict requirements of the site. This ensures that the new façade will fully reflect the original architecture.

How BRIX clinker is applied on top of a sandwich cladding

In the upcoming façade renovation, the new ventilated BRIX clinker will be built directly on top of the existing sandwich cladding. Before the new structure is installed, the old outer shell will be anchored to the building frame using frame anchors as shown in the picture below. The thermal insulation is then installed on top and a support rail to which the clinker brick elements are fixed.

The cross-sectional view below illustrates the structure in layers:

1. BRIX dashboard plate

2. Ventilation spacing

3. BRIX bracket rail / windbreak insulation

4. Old tiled sandwich panel

This structural solution improves the energy efficiency of the building and allows for a long-lasting ventilated façade – respecting the original architecture.

The progress of the project will be closely monitored, and we will share news both in the newsletter and on LinkedIn. Stay tuned!
